Almost all over the world, we see that there continuous efforts by NGOs and voluntary organizations to carry out Afforestation in and around cities. One such movement is very active in the city of Pune where I live and am part of the group called "Green Hills Group"(more information about the work on the group's website http://www.greenhillsgroup.org/ and my blog http://greenerpune.blogspot.com).

The group is now working with a small engineering software development IT company to build a small software product which will allow to carry out sapling / tree census, keep a record of every tree with its GPS coordinates and an image, manage the scheduled activity associated with every sapling that is planted and most importantly be able to logically group the trees and tag them with the name of sponsors. It is also designed to capture the tree related data using a GPS enables smartphone thus allowing easy capture of the data. It would have facility to update the data in a bulk and selecting the trees using spatial reference.

The corporates / individuals who sponsor these saplings planted by the NGOs are interested an knowing how their investments are being utilized and hence such a software hosted on a pulic site which gives access to information about the tree they have sponsored will build the transparency and trust between the sponsors and the NGO / voluntary organization.

These measurement will also go a long way in allowing the sponsoring companies to measure the carbon credits online- which also makes a very strong business case to develop and maintain such a software as a service which can be used by multiple NGOs and sponsoring corporates where carbon credits could be accumulated and traded.
