This was sometime in the month of June when I brought up the topic of trees, greening and conservation with Atul Gore, a colleague of mine at IBM. And this was probably 3rd of 4th time that I got to hear from him about the work that his brother in law Sanjay Athavle was doing as part of the NGO Green Hills Groups. This time around I decided to connect with him and this group - possibly plunge into action during this season.
Around the same time the residents of my society - "Sigma One" also started the discussion about planting trees on the Hills in the backyard. We called for a meeting and invited quotations from a few agencies. Got a quote of approx INR 220 per sapling which included the cost of sapling itself, digging the pit and manure. We thought we will plant 100 saplings to begin with some saplings to be planted along the road approaching our Society (which was a controversial matter because the property owners of the land through which the road passed were against planting any trees). After a couple of rounds of discussions the enthusiasm and participation went down.
However my connect with "Green Hills Group" got active and ir is rocking now - I hope it lasts long. I intend to turn this into a group blog from now on - expect at last a couple of members from Green Hills to start writing out here.
